Gelsted
In 1682, the village of Gelsted consisted of 10 farms, 3 houses with land and 3 houses without land. The total cultivated area amounted to 397.5 tønder land. In 1865, Gelsted gained a railway connection, but since the station was located some distance from the village, a new station town developed, which only later merged with the old village centre.
Around 1900, Gelsted was a thriving community with a church, rectory, two schools, mission house, community hall, railway, telegraph and telephone station, inn, and cooperative dairy. Gelsted also cherishes vibrant traditions. Every year in week 33, the Gelsted Market takes place, one of Denmark’s largest markets, attracting visitors from near and far. Hiking and maps
The Kingfisher. You can experience many different birds; ravens, red kites, ospreys, kingfisher and white-throated dippers along the river valley. The kingfisher is easily recognisable by its colourful plumage. It is timid, but you may experience it as it dives steeply to catch small fish.
Brown hairstreak – a butterfly in flames. During the summer months, you can experience these beautiful female butterflies along the river valley. You can see them flying around and sucking nourishment from flowers like hemp-agrimony (also known as holy rope) and goldenrods or from overripe or fermenting fruit nearby.
Broad-leaved marsh orchids – a protected species of orchid This purple flower gives the meadows along Brænde Ådal an atmospheric dark reddish hue, which you may be lucky enough to experience in May and July. Denmark has about 48 species of orchids that you can experience flowering freely in nature.
The fish stairway at Brende Mill is an oasis where you can experience the water from the mill pond as it is cascading down through a series of man-made plateaus. It is quite mesmerising to watch the water and listen to the sound of cascading water. Both the water detour and the fish stairway allow wildlife free passage through the area.
Favrskov Hills – a protected area with grazing sheep. The area is characterised by a wealth of cultural remnants; burial mounds from the Bronze and Late Iron Ages and high-ridged fields, which is a method of cultivation that was developed during the early Middle Ages. The area also has a number of smaller lakes, some of which are natural but other are the result of earlier excavations of raw materials.
